Dating as far back as three millennia, nigella seeds were found in several sites from ancient Egypt site, including King Tut's tomb. These seeds have many local names such as "chernuska", "kalonji", or black caraway. They have a gentle, earthy flavour combination of onions, cumin, and oregano that falls somewhere between cumin and thyme. Nigella seeds are often mixed together with several other common South Asian spice seeds like mustard, fennel, cumin, and fenugreek, to create a blend of popular Bengali beans and veggie dishes known as "panch phoron".
